Sheffield Unveils The First Singing River Sculpture

History will be made in Alabama on September 23, and the City of Sheffield invites you to join in this wonderful celebration.  An 18-foot tall semi-abstract Singing River Sculpture honoring Sheffield's legendary music heritage will be unveiled at Love Plaza in downtown Sheffield at 2:00 PM on September 23.

Local sculptor Audwin McGee designed and crafted this dramatic work of civic art out of recycled aluminum generously donated by Wise Alloys of Muscle Shoals.  The city is immensely proud that Sheffield is the first of the four largest Shoals cities to unveil its tribute to the sound that transformed popular music world-wide in the '50s, '60s and '70s: the renowned Muscle Shoals sound.  That legacy continues today with many new local bands forging their own unique sounds for new generations.

In the coming years, similar-sized Singing River Sculptures will arise in its sister cities, followed by a grouping of even larger music-related sculptures in a Sculpture Garden overlooking our Singing River, the Tennessee.

Sheffield's Singing River Sculpture will quickly become an iconic image of the city, and a lasting reminder to visitors and its citizens of the creative juices that flowed from Sheffield to change popular music forever.  The sculpture will be erected in the very heart of downtown, drawing people from everywhere and helping stimulate activities and businesses there.  Sheffield envisions the sculpture as a wonderful gathering place for entertainment and an anchor for its efforts for a lively downtown entertainment district.

So join the fine people of Sheffield for this event, in many ways signifying new life to this great and historic city.  We hope to see you at Love Plaza on Sunday afternoon, September 23, 2012.
Bring your family and friends.

Americana Music Awards 2012

Your are, I am, we all are............Americana.  I was reminded of that while watching  the 11th Annual Americana Music Awards. No fluff, no fuss, just pure storytelling through song.  From Bonnie Raitt and Booker T. Jones to our own Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Alabama Shakes, and the Civil Wars.   Hello "America," Alabama musicians shouted depth and soul that made me stand up, wipe a tear and truly say "Amen" to our fellow musicians.

They praised their predecessors who penetrated their soulful veins by fabulous storytelling through award-winning lyrics, vocals, and impeccable playing.  Jason Isbell thanked Rodney Hall and Jimmy Nutt for his last great album, "Here We Rest."  Patterson Hood praised his father, bassist David Hood, for his lifetime accomplishments when introducing Booker T. Jones, who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for Instrumentalist. Our little area is beaming again with a new wind of musicians, and taking music by storm.

My little "soap box" is this:  We need to stand up, dig deep, go back and think of our roots.  Family and friends, laughter and love;  music is the beat of our American hearts.  True Americana music runs deep and heavy in all genres.  It reassures great talent with true grit that naturally leaps from their being.  Thank you to all the Mommas and Daddies for giving them to us.  Thanks to all of you for supporting these musicians.  I can't wait for another great year of listening, can you?

Just a thought from one music fan,
Angi Nutt

September 2012
Greetings!
Much has happened since the last Skinny. Mainly, I've started recording a new CD! Last week, Mike Utley, Will Kimbrough, Casey Wood, Jim Mayer and I went in the studio and laid down eleven killer tracks! This is the same crew that played on Big Lonesomeso if you liked that one, you're gonna LOVE this one! (Yes, I am stoked!) Click here for an inside look at what really goes on while making a record. A spring 2013 release is in the works.

On August 18, I got to meet one of my idols, James Burton.
Burton and Chips Moman were on successive programs at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum. In the audience at the program for Chips were Reggie Young and Scotty Moore. As far as anyone knows, this was the first time Young, Moore, and Burton had been in the same building at the same time. A historic moment for sure. The three represent three of only four guitarists—the fourth being the late Hank Garlandever to play with Elvis. For all you Trivia buffs, Burton played guitar on the last track of my Jaded Virgin album.

As for literary news, I have essays in two new publications—the anthologies Circling Faith: Southern Women on Spirituality and Literary Dogs and Their South Carolina WritersSo ... for that special truth seeker or dog lover in your life, these books would make a nice gift! (Christmas is coming, y'all.)
Okay. This weekend, I'll be at the Southern Womens Writers Conference in Mount Berry, GA. Then Clarksdale, MS, where I'll be performing at Morgan Freeman's Ground Zero Blues Bar. (This event is being sponsored by the Carnegie Public Library.) After that, it's Birmingham and Auburn before heading back to Nashville where I'll be joined by Silas House, Matraca Berg and George Singleton for my annual "Literary In-The-Round" at the Bluebird Cafe! Click here for details on these and other dates.
See you on the road!

Joe South
(February 28, 1940 - September 5, 2012)
Joe South died September 5 at his home in Flowery Branch, GA. "It's a sad day for people who love music," said Marshall upon hearing the news. "Joe and I ran hard together from 1980-1984. I was crazy about him. We were like Bonnie and Cyde ... without the guns."
The above photo ran in the Nashville Banner on November 18, 1982.
